Raupert, J. Godfrey. Modern Spiritism..
Raupert, J. Godfrey. Modern Spiritism A Critical Examination of The Phenomena, Character, and Teaching in the light of the Known Facts..
London: Sands & Co., 1904.
First Edition. 8vo. 248pp. Publisher’s olive green cloth titled in black to spine and front board. Bumping to spine ends, some scuffing and edgewear and a general darkening of the cloth, nevertheless solid and strong. Internally clean, with some vehement and on occasion disparaging pencil annotation here and there. Laid in at the front are a couple of newspaper clipping dealing with hauntings, and the agenda of a meeting of a Yorkshire Diocesan Council, the verso of which has quite the sceptical array of notes regarding spiritualism (”See also: Modern Necromancy” etc.). A fascinating and fiery pre-war embracing of Spiritualism as a threat to established religion and the very fabric of society, proving that no matter what, every generation needs a Dungeons & Dragons panic.
